- 'The insect glaive can be used to control a Kinsect, a small insect that harvests extracts from monsters to boost your abilities. The insect glaive also allows you to vault, so you can perform jumping attacks at any time.' - Loading Screen Tip
- TLDR for beginners - For Kinsects, use Pseudocath or Whispervesp.
- - For glaives, use Jho, Lunastra, or Kjárr weapons.
- - Don't get Orange extract unless you're in multiplayer.

- Ctrl+f the bracket codes to quickly navigate.
- [1] Extracts
- Red - Increases the number of hits you perform with each attack. Getting this is your highest priority, above even hitting the monster.
- - Can always be obtained from a monster's head, and can also come from the front legs or tail.
- White - Increases movement speed and aerial jump distance.
- - Lasts for 120 seconds.
- - Usually comes from the body, legs or tail.
- Green - Recovers a bit of health.
- - Isn't obtainable from every monster, but typically comes from the tail.
- Specific extract locations for non-DLC monsters can be found on Kiranico under each monster's 'hit data' section. Extract locations for DLC monsters and Zorah Magdaros's magma cores can be found near the end of this guide.
- Combining non-Green extracts will grant additional buffs, on top of those belonging to the individual extracts.
- White/Orange - 10% defense bonus
- Red/White/Orange - 15% raw damage bonus, 10% defense bonus
- The extract indicator will begin to rapidly flash once your buffs only have 10 seconds left.
- Single or double buffs can be reapplied to refresh their durations as often as you want. However, triple buffs has a fixed duration that can't be refreshed. If you're not confident in your ability to regather extracts, sticking to just Red/White is preferred.
- Situations where triple buffs would be better are in multiplayer hunts (for the Flinch Free to prevent tripping), when the monster is about to die, or as a quick way to prevent your double buffs from expiring.
- [2] Moveset
- The Insect Glaive has two separate movesets: your moves with red extract, and your moves without. However as previously mentioned, you should never ever be using the unbuffed moveset. As such, this guide won't even bother covering them. Most movement values have been taken from Kiranico.
- (button) - (attack name) (MVs)
- △ - Strong Rising Slash (16+14+15)
- - If used after Strong Wide Sweep, does 4 hits with MVs of (10+16+14+15) instead.
- ↑△ - Strong Thrust (12+11)
- - Unremarkable filler move.
- △ > △ > △ - Strong Double Slash (16+14+28)
- - Good MVs, but kind of clunky due to the lead-up and the distance it moves you, which can mess with any follow up attacks.
- O - Strong Wide Sweep (18+26)
- - Has long horizontal reach, which opens up some neat positional plays.
- - Try sniping monsters with it as they run past.
- ↑O or ↑△ while sheathed - Leaping Slash (26)
- - Looks cool, but doesn't have i-frames and is too slow to be used for evading.
- - Can be used after Strong Rising Slash, Strong Double Slash, Strong Wide Sweep, Leaping Slash, or Dodge Slash.
- - Your finisher move, you'll ideally end every combo with this.
- - Moves you forward quite a bit. You can use this and let the momentum carry you to safety just before a monster attacks.
- - The second hit reaches far behind you. It also knocks down your teammates, so watch out.
- R2 + X - Vault
- - You can use this to lessen the effect of strong roars by vaulting just before they hit you. You'll fall and get back up, but spend a shorter time disabled than if you took the full roar.
- X in midair - Midair Evade
- - More useful as repositioning than as an evasion move.
- △ in midair - Strong Jumping Slash (10 per hit, varying number of hits)
- O in midair - Strong Advancing Slash (6+4+7+4+3+32)
- - Your aerial damage move, the last hit also does a bit of mounting damage.
- - Decent MVs, which unfortunately are tied to a very lengthy move that makes it hard to focus any of that damage.
- - If you land the last hit, you will perform a small jump that can be followed up with any aerial move.
- [3] The Kinsect
- 1. Attack Type: Sever or Blunt. Determines the damage type of your Kinsect.
- 2. Dust Effect: Poison, Paralysis, Blast, or Heal. Determines the effects caused by detonating the dust clouds released by your Kinsect when it attacks a marked target.
- 3. Element: Elemental damage that you've added to your bug. Costs materials to add and remove.
- 4. Power: How strong your Kinsect's physical attacks are.
- 6. Heal: Affects how much HP you recover with Green extracts and Heal dust clouds, as well as how fast your Kinsect recovers stamina.
- Manually recalling your Kinsect will recover some of its stamina. This amount is fixed and isn't affected by your gear or your Kinsect's stats.
- It takes about 7-13 hits to KO a monster with a blunt Kinsect in single player, depending on its stun resistance. You'll have to be proactive in marking the monster's head to reach that point in most hunts though.
- Adding element to your bug gives it a few extra points of damage per hit. Not a deal breaker, so you're not missing out on much by staying elementless.
- Attacks from your Kinsect work with Health augments and can also activate the heal from Nergigante's armor set bonus.
- [3a] Kinsect Bonuses
- Special buffs attached to your glaive that affect your Kinsect.
- 1. Sever Boost - Increases raw damage dealt by sever type Kinsects.
- 2. Blunt Boost - Increases raw damage dealt by blunt type Kinsects.
- 3. Element Boost - Increases elemental damage dealt by Kinsects.
- - From testing, increases the Kinsect's elemental damage by about 30%.
- 4. Health Boost - Increases the amount of health restored by the green extract. Does not affect Kinsect stamina recovery.
- 5. Speed Boost - Increases the Kinsect's flying speed.
- 6. Stamina Boost - Increases the Kinsect's stamina recovery rate (from testing, ~30-40% faster).
- [3b] Marking and Dust Effects
- Marking the monster will cause your Kinsect will automatically attack the marked area, releasing a cloud of dust with every attack. Detonate the cloud by attacking it or shooting it with slinger ammo (flash/sonic pods work), and you'll either inflict a bit of status damage or heal yourself, depending on your Kinsect's Dust Effect.
- R2 - Hit the monster with your glaive to mark it. Does a bit of blunt damage.
- L2+R2 - Fires a projectile to mark the monster instead.
- - When aiming, be sure to hold L2 until the projectile has fired, otherwise it'll just shoot straight (likely into the ground).
- - Doesn't do any damage by itself. You can use it to detonate bombs for the wake-up bonus.
- The mark itself can block projectiles like Rathian's fireballs if you attach it to the monster's face.
- The status damage inflicted by detonating the clouds is fixed, and isn't affected by status attack skills or the Kinsect's power stat.
- The health restored by Heal dust depends on your Kinsect's heal stat, but isn't affected by Health Boost from your glaive.
- [3c] Recommended Kinsects
- Getting extracts is your Kinsect's main job, anything else is extra. Any bug is usable as long as it has a high Speed stat. With that said, I would consider Pseudocath (Windchopper line), Whispervesp (Gullshad line) and True Dragon Soul (FFXIV quest line) to be at the top of the list.
- - All three have high Speed.
- - All three create Blast dust, which is the most generally useful dust effect.
- - Pseudocath - Sever damage, 12 Power, 15 Speed, 3 Heal
- - Whispervesp - Blunt damage, 3 Power, 15 Speed, 11 Heal
- - Better than Pseudocath in longer fights when playing solo due to KO potential.
- - True Dragon Soul - Blunt damage, 15 Power, 14 Speed, 1 Heal
- - Highest Power of the three, but low Heal stat hurts its ability to KO and performance in longer fights.
- - Personally, I find this Kinsect distracting since it's so big and flashy.
- [4] Mounting
- After hitting the monster with enough aerial attacks, you will mount it. Tire the monster out by stabbing it while avoiding its attacks and you'll be rewarded with a mount finisher as well as a lengthy knockdown.
- There are two types of attacks the monster will use when you're mounted:
- 1. It will jump and thrash around. This will drain your stamina unless you brace yourself (R2) to reduce the stamina loss, or move to a different location on its back. In most situations, moving is preferable since it'll prevent stamina loss entirely and let you keep attacking. However, certain monsters can attack in a way that will drain stamina no matter where you move.
- 2. It will attempt to smash you into a wall or pillar. If you don't move out the way, you'll be thrown off of the monster, but you can still press X to grapple back on with your slinger.
- Shooting flinching slinger ammo like Crystalbursts and Scatternuts at the monster will end your mount quicker.
- Moving while mounted will perform a spinning attack. This doesn't help mounts in any special way and shouldn't be relied upon as DPS.
- [4a] Should I be trying to mount as IG?
- It depends on multiple factors, but assuming that you're not having trouble with a monster, the answer leans towards 'no'.
- -Current end game armor sets rely heavily upon Master's Touch to maintain sharpness. Any set that uses Maximum Might to reach 100% affinity will suffer when using aerial attacks.
- -In single player, it takes two or three good Strong Jumping Slashes before you can get a mount. Unless you use slinger ammo as stated above or a tailraider is nearby, the mount will take long enough that you could probably have done more damage just fighting normally.
- -Multiplayer mount thresholds are too high for you to attempt a solo mount, so don't bother trying unless you see others using aerial attacks. Having flinching slinger ammo or tailraiders is still preferable, especially if you're not in a full party, but not mandatory.
- -Due to how status thresholds increase, if you ever find yourself mounting more than once, then you're probably spending too much time in the air.
- -Bazelgeuse is a monster where mounting is almost always useful, since a successful knockdown makes it lose all of its bomb scales. It also opens up opportunities to cut off its tail (reducing how many bombs it can drop) or build up KO (which also makes it lose its bombs).
- [5] Example Combos
- △ > △ > O > Repeat (Strong Rising Slash Combo > Strong Reaping Slash > Strong Wide Slash > Repeat)
- Your infinite combo. Try to end this with a Tornado Slash (O) if possible.
- ↑O > O (Leaping Slash > Tornado Slash)
- Hit and run combo that abuses the mobility of both moves. Useful against the likes of Kirin and Bazelgeuse.
- O > O (Strong Wide Sweep > Tornado Slash)
- Fast track to Tornado Slash that doesn't mess with your positioning as much.
- [6] Kinsect Canceling
- Your attacks can have their recovery animations canceled by giving your Kinsect an attack or return order. This lets you reposition quickly with more control than rolling, while saving stamina and dealing a bit of damage.
- QA/QR (quick Kinsect attack/return) - can quickly cancel recovery times with Kinsect commands
- SA/SR (slow Kinsect attack/return) - noticeable delay between the end of an attack and when any Kinsect orders can be given.
- Strong Rising Slash Combo - QA, QR
- Strong Thrust - QA, SR if holding forward while recalling, otherwise QR
- Strong Double Slash - SA, QR
- Strong Reaping Slash - QS, SR if holding forward while recalling, otherwise QR
- *Not fast enough to be considered QA, but not slow enough to be considered SA. Just quick enough to be usable though.
- [7] Extract Priming
- Just a little trick to make buff management easier. Have your kinsect grab an extract, but wait until your current buffs have or are about to run out before recalling it.
- For example, if you have triple buffs up and they're low on duration, send your Kinsect out to grab an extract (preferably Red). Once your buffs run out, immediately recall your Kinsect to get a fresh Red buff and keep attacking.
- This reduces the time spent regathering your extracts, which is the big drawback to using triple buffs. It's also useful in multiplayer, where you won't always have good access to certain monster parts when you need them.
- [8] Extract Locations for DLC Monsters and Zorah's magma cores
- As far as I can tell, it doesn't matter where you hit these, the extract you get is determined randomly.
- Deviljho:
- White - Legs
- Green - Tail
- Kulve Taroth:
- White - Legs, front leg gold plating
- Orange - Body, chest, chest gold plating, back leg gold plating, tail, tail gold plating
- Red - Head
- Orange - Body, tail
- Red - Front arms
- Orange - Head, horns, tail
- Red - Head
- Orange - Body
- *Unlike other monsters, you can't move back and forth while mounted on the Leshen.
- IG doesn't need any special skills to function. Like almost every other blademaster weapon, you just want your basic affinity, damage, and sharpness skills. If you don't know, those would be:
- Critical Boost
- Attack Up 4+
- Maximum Might
- Element Attack Up

- [11] Notes from the Iceborne Beta
- World's first expansion gives some new tricks to the Insect Glaive. Details can be found below.
- [11a] Kinsect charging
- Press L2 + △ + O to charge your kinsect using slinger ammo and gain beneficial effects. The buffs you get depend on what kind of ammo you use.
- Keep in mind that this only works with 'natural' ammo that you collect in the field. This means things like flash pods and hunting knives will not work.
- - Regardless of what type of slinger ammo you use, charging your kinsect allows it to collect up to two extracts at once and lengthens the duration of basic extracts (does not affect triple buffs).
- Red: 90 seconds > 135 seconds
- Orange: 150 seconds > 195 seconds
- Green: has no duration, but you can stack heals by collecting two green extracts at once
- Kinsect Charge (Spirit)
- - obtained by charging your kinsect with gatherable slinger ammo (stones, redfruit, crystalburst, etc.)
- - Increases the duration of your triple buff from 90 seconds to 135 seconds
- - Doubles your kinsect's maximum stamina, stacks with the new Stamina Upgrade weapon bonus
- Kinsect Charge (Power)
- - obtained by charging your kinsect with slinger ammo dropped by monsters (bomb pods, piercing pods, slinger thorns)
- - increases your Kinsect's damage (by 50%?)
- - slightly increases the rate at which your Kinsect attacks marked targets
- - You cannot charge while in the middle of a recovery animation.
- - Charging will automatically recall your kinsect. The effects and the timer will not begin until it has returned.
- - The effects of Spirit and Power charge do not stack.
- - You can refresh the duration by simply performing the move again.
- [11b] New attack: Descending Thrust
- Press R2 while in midair to drop out of the sky, impaling the monster on the way down before marking the monster.
- - Has movement values of roughly (28 + 43 + 7 + 36). By itself, it's slightly stronger than the Strong Wide Slash > Tornado Slash combo. The follow up kinsect attacks can widen the gap considerably.
- - However, its nature as an aerial attack makes it harder to control and aim properly.
- - Can be comboed into Strong Double Slash, Dodge Slash, and Tornado Slash.
- - If your kinsect is fully recalled when you start the attack, it'll hover in the air just after you start falling. Once you finish the last hit, the kinsect will perform a piercing charge towards your location. Useful with blunt bugs, can easily hit 3-4 times against large targets.
- - Landing the third or fourth hit will mark your target. If you hit multiple monsters, the one you hit last will be marked.
- - You have full control of the direction you're facing while falling, but only about 80° control in between the third and fourth hit.
- [11c] New weapon bonus: Stamina Upgrade and Healing
- Doubles your kinsect's uptime and stamina recovery rate. Stacks with Kinsect Charge (Spirit).
- [11d] The Clutch Claw
- Every weapon has access to the clutch claw, but the effects vary between them.
- - IG's clutch claw attack hits five times, with movement values of (14 + 15 +15 + 18 + 32)
- - A succesful attack will cause the monster to drop special red slinger ammo (bomb pods, piercing pods, slinger thorns, dragon pods).
- - IG is unique in that it is the only weapon that can use the claw in midair.
- - Multiple clutch claw attacks against the same spot will cause it to take extra damage for about 90 seconds. The area in question will be covered in white scratches when this happens, and your damage numbers will have small marks at the corners.
